HTC has formally announced its latest smartphone, the HTC U12 +. Wait a second: what happened to the HTC U12? Well, there is not one. HTC is launching the U12 + with that name, so you know it's big, it's new and competes with other "+" devices on the market, like Samsung's.

As such, HTC says that this is the star moment: you do not have to wait for another phone to appear as soon as it is launched, you can be sure that this is the flagship of 2018.

Here you will find everything you need to know about the latest and best HTC phone.

Formally announced on May 23, HTC has confirmed that its new flagship phone will cost £ 699 in 64 GB.

We will collect all the details of orders in advance and the best offers on this new phone as soon as we have all the details of the networks, but HTC has not yet confirmed the date it will be available.

The HTC U12 + is an evolution of the HTC U11 + design, with a Liquid Surface glass backrest, this time offered in three colors at launch. Those colors are Black Ceramic, Red Flame and Blue Translucent.

The Translucent model allows you to see a bit of the internal components through the back, but there is a blue sci-fi nuance. It is cute and geeky and we love it. Meanwhile, the Flame Red is the most striking of the models, changing from red to gold as you move it. Everything is thanks to the coloring layers on the back of this phone.

HTC has avoided a notched screen design, so this 6-inch phone is a bit larger than some recent rivals, keeping some chin and front up and under the screen. In the upper part there are two front cameras and the speaker, so it is not wasted space. The side bezels have been cut, however, with HTC using a new training technique to bring the edge of the screen to the edge of the phone.

While the front and back of the glass meet the metal core, it is actually the sides of the phone that offer the innovation. The buttons are no longer mechanical, but are sensitive to pressure with haptic feedback, which we have not seen before. They are lovely to use.

This plays with the unique element of the HTC U12 + that is Edge Sense, allowing you to tighten the phone in different ways to get answers, more on that later.

Everything offers IP68 protection and no, there is no 3.5mm headphone jack.

The HTC U12 + has a 6-inch Quad HD + LCD screen. It has an 18: 9 design, which offers a resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels, for 537ppi, making it one of the flagships with the highest resolution. Actually, only the LG G7 and the Samsung Galaxy S9 + offer these resolutions, and many opt for FHD +.

HTC has remained with LCD and seems to be of great quality. While it may not have those colors of surprise factor that drives AMOLED, it looks very natural and HTC's flagship in recent years have been good at offering an uncomplicated screen with few compromises. This screen also supports HDR, so it will potentially be compatible with the likes of Netflix or YouTube in HDR.

HTC has chosen not to use a notch design that has been widely adopted in smartphones after the launch of the iPhone X in 2017, which gives it a bit more conventionality.

It is not surprising, and welcome, to find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 at the heart of the U12 +. We are really impressed with the 845 devices we have found so far in 2018 and it seems that the HTC U12 + will join their ranks to offer a lot of power. It is backed by 6 GB of RAM and will start in 64 GB of storage, but also offers microSD that allows an easy and economical expansion.

The battery capacity is 3500mAh and it supports Quick Charge 3.0. This is not the largest capacity that exists - you will find that the Huawei P20 Pro offers 4000mAh and it is still common that the bigger the battery, the better.

We mentioned that there is not a 3.5mm headphone jack, instead, you will have to use the USB Type-C on the base to listen to music and change, with the HTC USonic headphones in the box. They will tune their individual ears while offering active noise cancellation.

The Hi-Fi edition of BoomSound ensures that the speakers of this phone sound very good, it also has Hi-Res support and aptHD and LDAC support for higher quality wireless audio.
